Numerous studies show that over half of all Americans work while they are on vacation. Even if they aren’t working a full eight hours on some big project, most are still checking and responding to work emails.
Very few workers are completely unplugged. Providing a comfortable work space is becoming essential for meeting the needs of today’s technology-laden guests.
Vacation rentals aren’t capitalizing on promoting Workcation Friendly amenities.
In this article, you’ll find ideas for creating comfortable work spaces and essential remote office amenities that will make your guests feel organized and productive while they’re away from their office.
Most vacation rentals have a kitchen table and that’s where the guests set up their remote office. What a pain it is to have to clean off the area for each meal!
But providing a separate desk and work space will certainly be welcomed by your remote office guests. It doesn’t have to be a full-on board room. A simple uncluttered surface is an upgrade from the kitchen table.
Decks and patios are perfect for setting up a temporary office. Use these spaces as an opportunity to market to your workcation guests.
I use the photo below in my vacation rental listing. The outside office space is staged with a laptop, magazine, mouse, and a cup of coffee. It looks like an inviting place to do some early morning work before heading out to enjoy a vacation day.
If space is limited, a wall-mounted drop down desk is a good solution.
These desks work very well in a shared Airbnb space. They can serve a dual purpose for an eating space, as well. And when not in use, the units can be flipped up out of the way.
Some styles have small cubbies for holding office essentials.

Lap desks work well for working from the couch, a chair, or even while in bed. As long as there is enough room on the desk for a laptop and a mouse, this type of set-up will do in a pinch. It is certainly better than just holding a laptop on your lap.
Obviously, an office style chair is ideal. A rolling chair with arms and a comfortable seat will make your guest feel settled in his or her remote workspace.
Don’t forget about ergonomics. If you create a space that is ergonomically friendly, be sure to include these special amenities in your listing.
Keep in mind that a lot of travelers are into gaming. When you include a gaming chair, this will be something you can include in your listing and social media marketing. Setting up a space in your vacation rental for gamers is sure to appeal to travelers with teenagers, as well as the serious adult gamer.
Some spaces are not suited for a full-size office chair. Consider a folding chair, stool, or upgrade to one that swivels with height adjustment.
Charging stations are a must have item in a vacation rental. And to go a little further, you may want to include charging cables and charger plugs.
Having an available outlet near the workstation is important. When outlets are a bit of a stretch to reach, charging stations are the solution.
Most charging stations have multiple USB ports, as well as outlets. I have these in my vacation rental. I placed our vacation rental logo sticker on the top to deter a guest from “accidently” packing it when they depart.
Set yourself apart from your vacation rental competition by providing a few basic office space essentials.
Hotels provide paper and pens for their guests, so why should your vacation rental be any less accommodating?
Consider providing the following office supplies and see how your guests respond.
A matching Office Supply Kit that coordinates with your vacation rental space would be perfect!
If space allows, include a whiteboard near the desk area. Be sure to have dry erase markers and a whiteboard eraser on hand.
Whiteboard can double as a space for you to write important messages to your guests. For example, include your phone number for immediate assistance and the Wifi Password. Providing the rental’s address is handy for a quick reference when a guest is ordering meal deliveries.
Promoting your remote workspace amenities is sure to capture the attention of many travelers. Be sure to stage the workspace in a way that shows its functionality.
Include details in your listing about what you’re providing. Share the photos on social media.
