Have you thought about offering vacation experience packages to your guests? Upselling with a vacation experience package is a unique way to set your vacation rental apart from your competition.
Nearly every successful business offers some form of upselling to their customers. Even the McDonald’s drive-thru upsells – “would you like an apple pie with that?”.
Bath and Body Works retailers rarely fail to mention adding a trial size product during checkout.
So what types of upselling vacation experience packages could you offer to your guests?
Vacation experience packages can boost your income, create a better guest experience, and develop relationships with local businesses.
Example:
2 nights = $300
2 nights lodging + basic adventure package (1 hour horseback riding and dinner at xyz restaurant for 2) = $550 ($300+$250)
Expenses: 1 hr horseback riding $29/person, dinner $74 = $103. You’ve just increased your revenue by $118.
Travelers are looking for more in a vacation than just a play to stay. They seek adventures that will enhance their vacation experience.

When brainstorming some ideas for vacation experience packages, keep local small businesses in mind.
Establish a relationship with local business owners to create a package that best suits your guest market. Many local businesses will even deliver and set up the packages for you.
Consider co-branding the packages to add value to your offering. Work with the local business to ensure their approval for using their business name and/or logo in your advertising.
In addition, work with the local business to suggest including the vacation experience package from their side of the business, as well. This will provide a referral for your vacation rental services and the local business has the benefit of a commission from selling the package.
Do you have a side business or hobby you can incorporate into a package? Do you have extra time in your schedule to provide some one-on-one attention for your guests?
To take the experience to the next level of service, offer combo vacation packages. For example, add a Spa Packages to the Anniversary Package to make it extra special.
In additional to all-inclusive packages, consider pricing the package items separately. Separate pricing allows the guest to select items that best suit their needs and vacation timeframe.
These packages work well for girls-night-out and sister/friend trips.
Get to know your guests.
Review your past guests’ notes to learn more about why your guests are visiting your property and your area. Are you guests young couples, middle aged career-driven, retirees, or families?
The more you know about the people visiting your area, the easier it will be to create vacation experience packages that meet their needs.
Join area Facebook groups where travelers post questions about things to do. What questions are they asking? Tailor your packages around their inquiries.
Avoid becoming overwhelmed with creating and offering vacation experience packages. Start small by only offering a couple of options and see how it goes.
Create marketing materials for your packages and post them on social media. Use hashtags that will attract guests to your package deals. Create Pinterest boards that showcase the experiences available in your packages.
